Sometimes I have these dreams where I am running and cannot get into a rhythm.  This morning that was a reality.  For the first .3 I was all off-kilter and my cadence was just...strange.

I had several factors working against me.  One was the early morning (got out at 4:40).  Another was the fact that I had finished my Thursday run just 10 hours before and my heel was screaming.  But the worst was that there was a nice sheen of ice on the road/sidewalk.

I eventually found my rhythm, but I never got out of first gear.  North/south roads were just a little slick, but east/west roads were more so.  I slid a couple times, but nothing too serious.  Throughout the run I had a hot and steamy love affair with 10 minute pace.

We're supposed to get some snow on top of this.  Tomorrow should be fun.  Class tonight, class tomorrow, so I will be morning running again tomorrow.

No wonder you had a hard time finding your rhythm. Sounds like some tough running conditions and at 4:40. Way to go getting it done!

I don't know how anyone could get into a rhythm in those conditions. I ran slower than 10 min pace this morning and I didn't have the excuses that you have.

when I run in the morning (which I do on occasion) I feel so much slower than I do in the afternoon. It also takes me a lot longer to warm up. I just have a little more energy in the afternoon. I don't know if it's because of a break in my routine or if it's because usually morning runs fall on a day when I'm recovering.

I'd be curious to know what someone like you (who primarily runs in the morning) would experience if you ran in the afternoon. I wonder if it would have any effect whatsoever on your energy level (Not that your energy level isn't totally excellent!) I wonder if you'd be slower, faster, or no change.

Sorry it was not a smooth-feeling run, but I know all to well that days like that just happen--you will have a great run soon! I'm a morning runner, and would like to weigh in on morning vs afternoon. I have noticed, surprisingly, that on the occasional days where I run later in the day, I do feel more energetic from the start and do not need to warm up as much before I start to feel good. I think a lot of it has do to with the fact that I have eaten a significant amount of food already that day, and the tank is full--because on days when I eat a full breakfast and then run about an hour or two later I get the same energized feeling. Unfortunately most mornings I only have time to sip a little coffee and then I am out the door--and it takes a while to get going.

I'm weighing in on the morning/afternoon run too!

I tried it for three weeks. I tried afternoon running. I hated it. I think the engergy thing was good for a day or two. Then I found myself annoyed with traffic, that I had to run after work in the first place and still had so much to do etc etc etc. Now I just try to get to be early and get up at 5. Although I may have to get up a teensy earlier to get in longer runs.

I vote for morning runs!
