I decided that I have to do at least a little speed before my half coming up at the end of April, but I really don't have a time goal.  But since I would like to PR in a 10K a couple weeks after that, I do need to actually train instead of just running some leisurely miles.  So I'm on a speed work Tuesday, tempo work Thursday, long run (slightly faster than I've been currently running) on Saturday type of schedule.

I really have no desire to be a slave to a program and it was hard to convince myself to just do the 6 x 400s that I had planned (or thought I had planned, I was actually supposed to do 4 x 800, but I'll do that next week instead, whoops).  But I did and I was happy.  I ran all 400s at a 1:45-1:50 pace and it was comfortable.  I probably could have gone a little faster, but since this is my first "speed" workout in a looooooooong time, I went for conservative instead.  I need to get a little more confident in my abilities.

I did a little over 2 for a warmup, my 400s on the track with 400 in between, and then a bit over a mile home.  Didn't wear the garmin (no batteries) and I think it was a bit over 6, but not quite 6.5, so I'll just call it 6.

Sounds like you have a good training plan and are off to a good start. I agree with not wanting to be a slave to a training plan. I did that last year and it really took the fun out of running for me. Which 1/2 are you doing?

Stacy, I'm doing the Illinois 1/2 in Champaign. It's April 30. I'm not racing it this year.

Joe, I find that running faster paces can be addicting, but not always in a good way. Last year I felt a little too mechanical about running, especially as I got closer to the big race. Granted, there was a lot of drama in my life at that point--so that contributed to it--but my training last year made me view running as just one more thing I had to do, and like Stacy said, it really sucked the fun out of running (I hear you, Stacy!). I have a obsessive personality, so I need one thing in my life that is low key. For me, running is that thing. I'd still rather run because I like it, not because I feel maniacally driven to do it. That seems to work for a lot of people (like you, you maniac!), but I just get exhausted and crabby.

As a former slave to a plan, I have to say I admire your ability to keep the fun in running without becoming a slave. I seem to fall completely apart if I don't have a plan that I feel obligated to. However, I did get burned out on my last plan.

I hear ya, there are a million different reasons people run. I'm still kinda new to running, and definitely in the obsessed stage right now, and enjoying every minute of my runs. Usually I lose interest by this time with my activities. If I viewed it as something I "had" to do, I would probably quit because life has too many obligations right now.

Anyway, sounds like with doing your own thing you have hopefully found that happy medium...awesome!
