Guessing on the fast miles.  I did a ladder.  started with 4 min hard (after a small warm up) and then went down to 1 and back up.  It was ridiculously hot.  I can't even believe that the computer says it was only 76 degrees.  It felt like it was 90.  Humidity was at 49%, though, and it was sunny.  After the first 2 hard portions I walked a bit of each of my recovery times.  Then I stopped at the house after 4 miles to hydrate.  I carried my water with me the rest of the way.  My cool down was the last 1.5 miles.  My average pace was just slightly over 9 minutes, which is pretty impressive considering how hot it felt AND considering I walked a bit throughout the run.

Humidity is hard to deal with. It makes me feel sluggish! If you averaged 9 minute pace with walking then you must have really been moving when you were running!

It is so hard to acclimate at this time of year. But you'll do it. Interesting workout. I've done ladders before but I am not sure I know why they are better than straight intervals. Do you?

I think I overdo the ladders, but I get bored and I'm not really following any plan right now. I told myself that I was going to start the training plan that I use with my kids, but I haven't done that yet. No real excuse.

For me, I find ladders mentally harder. Going from more minutes to less is easy, but when I've been going hard for a minute and then I have to gear myself to go faster for progressively longer periods of time, I have to be tougher.

One of my greatest weaknesses is my mind. I'm trying not to listen to the voice in my head that says, "I did enough. I ran hard enough. I can stop now."

Great job on the ladder intervals. And great job on the pace!

It's probably neither here or there, but when I've done ladder intervals, I've always started out with the lower number and done something like 1-2-3-2-1-2-3.

Do you coach cross-country?

I do. I enjoy it, but I'm a teacher first. Unfortunately this will probably be my last season coaching. I have mixed feelings about that.
